It happens to all of us - even the USAF. We get a year older. I had the honor of serving on active duty during the Persian Gulf era in hospital administration.
My favorite duty assignment was at Edwards AFB, CA in the Mojave Desert. Here’s why:
First, it was VERY cool to have the space shuttle land there. To me, it was the most thrilling not to see it land but to hear it approach with its signature DOUBLE SONIC BOOM!
Second, I met legendary Chuck Yeager at the Officers’ Club. It didn’t matter how old he got. He continued to find young females to chat with.
Third, the scenery was stunning. I loved to watch the mountains turn purple at sunset. I laughed the first time I saw a tumbleweed blow by on a hot, dry day. My thought was, “Just like in the movies.”
Fourth, another exciting experience was when I nearly stepped on a Mojave Green rattlesnake in the hospital parking lot. Fortunately, I missed it, and it was just a baby.
Fifth, when I woke up to my bed moving, I realized it was not a dream but an earthquake. Fortunately, there was no damage to the area!
